We’re sure we’ll not be the first to mention it, given the tabloids’ tendency to yank at the metaphorical heartstrings of emotion at any available opportunity, but it is somewhat apt that today, the day that Man Utd bring back their third European Cup, is also the day that George Best was born, in 1946. The man who scored 138 goals in 361 appearances for United was part of the side that won their first Big Cup in 1968. Let’s hope the current players don’t follow his lead on how to celebrate it then…
Elsewhere today, Best’s native Northern Ireland voted yes to a new peace deal in 1998, ending 30 years of scrapping between Protestants and Catholics. In 1981, the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe was found guilty of killing 13 women and sentenced to 30 years in prison. In 1977 the Orient Express made it’s last journey from Paris to Istanbul, while in 1915 Britain’s worst train disaster occurred in Gretna Green in Scotland when 227 people were killed when a passenger train hit an army train. And in 1840, Britain ended the practice of sending convicts to Australia, not that the snide jibes ever ceased.
