The Daily MailMiddlesbrough - Gareth Southgate.Southgate was actually Steve McClaren's first signing for Boro in 2001, when the future England manager paid £6.5m to poach the defender from Aston Villa. The first person Southgate signed when he succeeded McClaren as Boro manager was Julio Arca, a £1.75m buy from Sunderland in July 2006. Southgate gave the Argentinian a central midfield role and, despite sustaining a broken bone in his foot and a serious knee injury, Arca has been an instrumental part of Southgate's regime at the Riverside.Well I can agree that McClaren's first signing was a terrific purchase. He lead the team to league cup glory and also had a great run to the UEFA Cup final back in 2006. Southgate, on the other hand, has brought in a couple of dummies in the last three years. His debut signing has been a regular to the team, but I can safely say he has not been instrumental at the Riverside. He is too injury prone at the moment. He is a wonderful footballer when he is fit though.
