"QUAKERS REVEAL INTERNATIONAL’S ROUTE TO THE CLUB

Darlington Football Club chairman George Houghton has revealed how his young grandson ‘scouted’ Quakers’ Liechtenstein international winger Franz Burgmeier.

George said: 'Franz Burgmeier came to us through what I think is a unique route!   My twelve-year-old grandson Max spotted him playing for Liechtenstein against England in a European Championship qualifier a couple of years ago and Franz obviously made an impression playing against the likes of Owen and Rooney.

'Max mentioned his name to myself and club director David Jones and David spent a lot of time researching Franz’s career and getting positive reports from his contacts in football.   Although Franz had the opportunity to sign for Metz in France he chose to come to Darlington for a trial.

'During this trial Dave Penney saw Franz’s potential both as a player and an asset to the club and we are delighted to have negotiated a contract with Franz to sign for us.   Young Max obviously has an eye for a good player when he sees one as Franz has made a very positive start to his Darlington career and is proving very popular with the fans.'

Burgmeier has made a confident start to his career at Darlington, becoming the first Liechtenstein player ever to score in the Football League when he netted against Port Vale recently in a man-of-the-match performance."
