Derby's Archie Gemmill: Incase you can't read the scribble...

Archie and co. pile the goals in...

Derby fans will be over the moon with their first win in nearly a whole calendar year at the weekend, when, thanks to an own goal and a dubious looking handball, they managed to squeeze out a 2-1 win over Sheffield United. Well done to all involved.

But just to remind those beleaguered fans that they used to get excited about genuinely exciting things, today in 1970 saw them become the first English side to score 12 goals in a European game. These days, they're more likely to be on the end of such a result, but back then it was poor Finn Harps, the Irish side that sound like a character from Ripley Bogle.

The 12-0 first leg became 16-1 on aggregate after a 4-1 win in Ireland, but they would soon be on the receiving end of a mini-hounding when they lost 5-2 on aggregate to Greek side AEK Athens. To relive those glory days though, click here to see all 12 goals. We're not sure who the 'keeper was that night, but he'd clearly had a few Guinness too many...

Also on this day, in 1949, the first episode of Road Runner was aired, The Fast and The Furry-ous. Vin Diesel starred in a popular cinema remake some years later.

Meanwhile, in 1955, Juan Peron is deposed as leader of Argentina, probably for all that singing.

And it's Eemil Sillanpää! As they say in Finland, to;  Radio Two favourite Katie Melua (24), actress turned poker player Jennifer Tilly (50) and big Nev, Neville Southall (50). Today was also the day, that in 1977,  Marc Bolan died in a car crash.
